Neocaridina davidi var. “Blue Velvet”

Overview

Blue Velvet ‘A Grade’ shrimp are a striking freshwater dwarf shrimp variety, known for their solid medium-to-dark blue coloration with minimal transparency. They’re hardy, peaceful, and perfect for planted aquariums. A Grade means they have consistent color coverage, though not as dark as premium Blue Dream shrimp.

Diet

Blue Velvet shrimp are omnivores and thrive on variety:

  • High-quality shrimp pellets or granules

  • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, kale)

  • Algae wafers

  • Biofilm and algae in the tank

  • Occasional protein foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp – in small amounts)

Tip: Avoid overfeeding — feed what they can eat in 1–2 hours, 2–3 times per week if algae/biofilm is plentiful.

Tankmates

  • Peaceful nano fish: Ember Tetras, small Rasboras, Pygmy Corydoras

  • Other Neocaridina shrimp varieties (but avoid crossbreeding if you want pure colors)

  • Avoid aggressive or predatory fish like cichlids, bettas, or larger barbs

Breeding

  • Very easy in stable, shrimp-safe tanks

  • Females carry 20–30 eggs under their abdomen for ~3–4 weeks

  • Babies need no special care if there are no predators and the tank has biofilm and hiding spots

⚠️ Special Notes

  • Sensitive to copper — avoid medications or plant fertilizers containing copper

  • Stable water parameters are more important than “perfect” parameters

  • Perform small, regular water changes (10–20% weekly)
