Description:
Cryptocoryne usteriana is a beautiful and hardy crypt species prized for its tall, wavy leaves and deep green to bronze coloration. Fully grown, this plant can reach 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) in height, making it an excellent background centerpiece in medium to large aquariums. Its thick, textured leaves provide a natural, lush look that enhances planted tanks, community tanks, and aquascapes alike.

Unlike many stem plants, Cryptocoryne usteriana grows from a sturdy root crown, producing broad leaves that sway gently in the current. Over time, it will form impressive clumps and can spread by sending out small runners. Once established, this species is long-lived and requires very little maintenance.

Care Guide

Lighting:
• Thrives in low to medium light
• Higher light may increase red/bronze tones, but is not required

Substrate:
• Prefers a nutrient-rich substrate such as planted aquarium soil
• Root tabs are recommended if using inert substrates (gravel/sand)

CO₂ & Fertilization:
• CO₂ is not required, but can enhance growth and coloration
• Benefits from root fertilizers more than liquid-only dosing

Water Conditions:
• Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
• pH: 6.2–7.8
• Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
• Very adaptable and stable once settled

Important Note (Crypt Melt):

Like all crypts, Cryptocoryne usteriana may experience “crypt melt” when moved into a new aquarium. This is normal. Old leaves may die back, but new growth will return once the roots are established. Just leave the plant in place and avoid disturbing it during this period.
