Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher)

The Electric Blue Acara is a stunning freshwater cichlid known for its brilliant iridescent blue coloration and peaceful personality. Unlike many other cichlids, this species is relatively calm and can be a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Native to Central and South America, these fish add vibrant color and personality to any aquarium setup.

Care Level:

Easy to Moderate

Temperament:

Peaceful to semi-aggressive (generally calm compared to most cichlids)

Max Size:

Up to 6–7 inches (15–18 cm)

Tank Size:

Minimum 40 gallons for a pair

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Hardness: 3–12 dGH

Diet:

Omnivore — They thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter like blanched spinach or peas.

Tank Setup:

Provide plenty of open swimming space along with hiding areas using driftwood, rocks, and plants. They enjoy a soft substrate and moderate water flow. Live plants are safe as Electric Blue Acaras typically don’t uproot them.

Compatibility:

They do well in community setups with similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Ideal tank mates include angelfish, larger tetras, rainbowfish, and other non-aggressive cichlids. Avoid very small fish or fin-nippers.

Breeding:

Electric Blue Acaras are substrate spawners. Once paired, they clean a flat surface for egg-laying and will protect their fry diligently. Maintaining stable water parameters and providing a high-quality diet can encourage breeding behavior.
