Firemouth Cichlid (Thorichthys meeki)
Description:
The Firemouth Cichlid is a popular Central American species prized for its vivid red-orange throat and underside. When displaying or feeling threatened, it flares its gill plates to show off this intense “fire” coloration, making it a real standout in any aquarium. Their body is typically a soft silver-gray with subtle patterning, allowing the red to really pop.
Firemouths are a great option for hobbyists looking to get into Central American cichlids, as they offer a good balance of color, personality, and manageable aggression compared to larger species.
Care Guide:
- Adult Size: Up to 5–6 inches
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive (more territorial when breeding)
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons (larger for groups)
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Moderate hardness preferred
- Tank Setup:
Provide plenty of rocks, driftwood, and caves to establish territories. Sand or fine substrate is ideal, as they enjoy digging and sifting through the bottom. - Diet:
Omnivorous — will readily accept high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Occasional vegetable matter is beneficial. - Tankmates:
Best kept with other similarly sized semi-aggressive fish. Avoid very small or timid species. Works well with other Central/South American cichlids, larger tetras, and catfish. - Behavior Notes:
Firemouths are known for their bluff displays—flaring their gills to appear larger—but are often less aggressive than they look. During breeding, they can become more territorial and protective.
