Overview

Crested geckos are arboreal lizards from New Caledonia, famous for their “eyelash” crests and wide variety of colors and patterns. They’re hardy, gentle, and perfect for both beginners and experienced reptile keepers.

Diet

  • Staple: Commercial gecko meal powder (Pangea, Repashy) mixed with water

  • Protein Treats: Gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, or black soldier fly larvae 1–2 times weekly

  • Occasional Fruit Treats: Mashed banana, mango, papaya

Tip: Always provide fresh, clean water in a shallow dish.


Handling

  • Start slowly, handle a few minutes at a time

  • Support their body and allow them to walk hand-to-hand

  • Avoid grabbing the tail — they can drop it, and it won’t grow back


Cleaning

  • Spot clean daily

  • Replace substrate every 4–6 weeks unless bioactive

  • For bioactive setups, monitor cleanup crew and plant health


⚠️ Special Notes

  • Keep away from temperatures above 82°F — can be dangerous

  • Never house adult males together

  • Females can live together in large tanks if there’s no bullying

  • Tail loss is not harmful but is permanent
