Giant Koi Betta — Betta splendens

Description

The Giant Koi Betta is a selectively bred form of Betta splendens that combines two standout traits: large size and koi-style coloration. These fish can grow significantly bigger than standard bettas, often reaching 3–5 inches+, with a thicker body and more powerful presence.

Their colors resemble koi fish, featuring a mix of white, red, orange, black, and sometimes blue, often in marbled or patchy patterns. No two are exactly alike, which makes each fish unique. Many also show metallic or galaxy scaling, adding extra flash under aquarium lighting.

They are true showpieces—bold, interactive, and full of personality.

Care Guide

Tank Size:

  • Minimum 10 gallons (larger is better for giants)

Temperature:

  • 78–82°F (25–28°C)

Water Parameters:

  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Soft to moderately hard water
  • Stable, clean water is key

Filtration:

  • Gentle flow (they don’t like strong currents)

Diet

  • High-quality betta pellets as a staple
  • Supplement with:
    • Frozen or live bloodworms
    • Brine shrimp
    • Daphnia

Feed once or twice daily, small portions—avoid overfeeding.

Temperament

  • Semi-aggressive
  • Males should be kept alone
  • Can sometimes be kept with:
    • Peaceful, fast tank mates (in larger tanks)

    • Other bettas
    • Fin-nipping fish

Tank Setup

  • Provide:
    • Plants (live or silk)
    • Hiding spots
    • Open swimming space
  • Lid recommended (they can jump)

Special Notes

  • Being larger, they produce more waste, so regular water changes are important
