Red Honey Gourami (Trichogaster chuna)

(formerly known as Colisa chuna*)*

The Red Honey Gourami is a peaceful, small labyrinth fish known for its warm red-orange coloration and gentle temperament. It’s an excellent centerpiece fish for smaller community aquariums and is especially popular with planted tank keepers.

Description

  • Scientific Name: Trichogaster chuna

  • Common Names: Red Honey Gourami, Honey Gourami

  • Adult Size: 1.5–2 inches

  • Lifespan: 4–6 years (with proper care)

  • Temperament: Peaceful

  • Origin: Northern India & Bangladesh slow-moving waters

Males display the brightest red/orange coloration, especially during breeding. Females are typically more muted, often yellow-gold with less intense coloration.

They are labyrinth fish, meaning they can breathe atmospheric air using a specialized organ — so you’ll often see them gulping air at the surface.

Tank Requirements

Tank Size

  • Minimum: 10 gallons (single or pair)

  • Ideal: 15–20 gallons for a small group

Aquascape

  • Heavily planted tanks are best

  • Floating plants help them feel secure

  • Gentle flow — they dislike strong currents

  • Dark substrate enhances coloration

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 74–82°F (23–28°C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water

  • Filtration: Gentle — sponge filter or low-flow HOB works well

Stable, warm water is key. They do not tolerate sudden temperature swings.
