Red Top Trewavasae (Male) (Labeotropheus trewavasae)
Description:
The Red Top Trewavasae is a bold and highly sought-after Lake Malawi mbuna, especially in mature males. Males display a striking contrast of deep blue to purple bodies with a vivid red or orange dorsal fin (“red top”), making them a real centerpiece in any African cichlid tank. Their unique body shape—with a slightly elongated snout—is adapted for grazing algae off rocks in the wild.
Females are much more subdued in color, typically appearing in shades of brown or gray, which makes the males’ coloration stand out even more.
Care Guide:
- Adult Size: 5–6 inches
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive to aggressive (typical mbuna)
- Tank Size: 55 gallons minimum (75+ recommended for groups)
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH: 7.8–8.6
- Hard, alkaline water
- Tank Setup:
A rock-heavy setup is essential to mimic their natural habitat. Provide plenty of caves and territories, along with open swimming areas. Sand or fine substrate works best. - Diet:
Primarily herbivorous — feed high-quality spirulina or veggie-based pellets. Supplement with blanched vegetables (like spinach or zucchini). Avoid too much protein-heavy food to prevent digestive issues like bloat. - Tankmates:
Best kept with other mbuna of similar temperament. Avoid overly aggressive species or very passive fish. Mixing with other similarly colored species may increase aggression. - Behavior Notes:
Males are territorial and will claim rock structures, especially when breeding. Keeping one male with multiple females helps spread aggression and promotes natural behavior.
