Saulosi Cichlid (Pseudotropheus saulosi)

Description:
The Saulosi is a small but incredibly colorful Lake Malawi mbuna, highly prized for its unique natural color difference between males and females. Mature males display a rich electric blue with vertical black barring, while females are a bright golden-yellow. This strong sexual dimorphism makes them one of the most visually striking and desirable mbuna species in the hobby.

Despite their small size, Saulosi have big personalities and are very active, making them excellent for brightly colored African cichlid displays.

Care Guide:

  • Adult Size: 3–4 inches
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (typical mbuna behavior)
  • Tank Size: 55 gallons minimum (larger for colonies)
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
    • pH: 7.8–8.6
    • Hard, alkaline water
  • Tank Setup:
A rock-heavy aquascape is essential. Provide lots of caves and hiding spaces to establish territories, along with some open areas for swimming. Sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal.
  • Diet:
Primarily herbivorous — feed high-quality spirulina or vegetable-based cichlid pellets. Supplement with blanched vegetables. Avoid high-protein foods to prevent bloat.
  • Tankmates:
Best kept with other mbuna of similar size and temperament. Keeping them in groups helps spread aggression and maintain balance within the colony.
  • Behavior Notes:
Saulosi do best in groups with multiple females per male. Males will establish territories within the rockwork, and females will form loose groups. Their small size helps reduce overall aggression compared to larger mbuna species.
