Vallisneria gigantea – Description & Care Guide

Description

Vallisneria gigantea, commonly known as Giant Vallisneria or Giant Tape Grass, is a tall, grass-like background plant that creates a natural jungle look in larger aquariums. Its long ribbon-shaped leaves can grow all the way to the water’s surface, often forming beautiful flowing curtains that add movement and depth to the aquascape.

This hardy species is popular with both beginners and experienced aquarists due to its fast growth and ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions. It is especially well suited for large community tanks, cichlid aquariums, and planted displays.

Size & Growth

  • Leaf length: 60–120+ cm (24–48 inches)

  • Ideal as a background plant

  • Spreads by runners, forming dense colonies over time

Care Level

  • Easy to Moderate

  • Very adaptable once established

Lighting

  • Low to moderate lighting works well

  • Stronger lighting promotes faster growth and longer leaves

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Tolerates both soft and harder water conditions

Substrate & Fertilization

  • Nutrient-rich substrate preferred but not required

  • Benefits from root tabs for best growth

  • Do not bury the crown — plant roots gently into the substrate

Placement & Aquascaping

  • Best used in the background of larger aquariums

  • Great for creating natural cover for fish

  • Excellent choice for angelfish, discus tanks, and larger community setups

Additional Notes

  • Produces runners frequently; easy to propagate.

  • May “melt” slightly after planting but typically rebounds quickly.

  • Leaves can reach the surface and sway with water flow, creating a very natural look
