Venustus Hap (Nimbochromis venustus)

Description:
The Venustus is one of the most impressive and recognizable Lake Malawi cichlids. Males develop a striking yellow-gold body with bold dark mottling and a distinct blue face as they mature. Females and juveniles display a more camouflaged pattern, often with blotched markings that help them blend into their surroundings in the wild.

Known for their size, presence, and bold hunting behavior, Venustus are true showpiece fish that dominate any African cichlid aquarium.

Care Guide:

  • Adult Size: 8–10+ inches
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive to aggressive (predatory hap)
  • Tank Size: 125 gallons minimum recommended
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
    • pH: 7.8–8.6
    • Hard, alkaline water
  • Tank Setup:
Provide a spacious aquarium with both open swimming areas and some rock structures for territory definition. Sand substrate is ideal. Strong filtration is recommended due to their size and feeding habits.
  • Diet:
Carnivorous predator — feed high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen foods such as krill, shrimp, and fish-based proteins. Avoid excessive fatty or mammal-based foods.
  • Tankmates:
Best kept with other large, robust Malawi haps or peacocks. Avoid small fish, as juveniles and smaller tankmates may be seen as food.
  • Behavior Notes:
Venustus are ambush predators in the wild and may “hover” or stalk before striking. Males become more territorial as they mature, and spacing in the tank is important to reduce aggression.
